Outgoing voice calls from Reliance Jio are no longer completely free
Reliance Jio: Reliance Jio on Wednesday announced that it will charge its subscribers at 6 paise per minute for voice calls on other mobile networks. The Mumbai-based telecom operator claimed that the new voice call charge was brought in due to TRAI's interconnect usage charge. This charge is for outgoing calls between two separate networks. These calls are called off-net voice calls. This change is for making voice calls at another telecom operator. Whereas Jio to Jio number, incoming calls and landline calls from Jio will remain free as before. There is no extra charge for this.
For off-net voice calls, Reliance Jio has introduced four IUC top-up vouchers for prepaid customers. These range from Rs 10 to Rs 100. Jio has said that additional data will be given to customers in exchange for IUC top-up vouchers, so that customers do not have to pay additional tariffs. Apart from this, postpaid Jio customers will be charged 6 paise per minute for off-net data outgoing calls. Additional data will also be given to postpaid customers.
Reliance Jio issued a statement to the media stating that the telecom operator has to pay an interconnect usage charge for off-net voice calls on other networks. For this reason, customers will now be charged under compulsion. The operator claimed that he paid Rs 13,500 from his revenue due to the interconnect usage charge in the last three years. Jio alleges that in 2017, TRAI changed the IUC charge. But other telecom operators had raised the tariff of voice calls to Rs 1.50 per minute.
Reliance Jio has assured that a fee of 6 paise per minute will be charged for outgoing off-net calls until TRAI cancels the IUC altogether. It is worth noting that TRAI has set a target of zero termination charge till 1 January 2020. If this happens, customers will not have to pay any charges for off-net voice calls after this date.
